Many years ago there was a memorable TV commercial about a watch that “takes a licking and
keeps on ticking.” Well, life it like that. It doesn’t stop while you figure out what to do.
Over the past few months, I have talked with several individuals who wanted to start into business, but who said, “maybe I should wait until … (something or other happens).” Like:
- Maybe I should wait until the economy improves
- Maybe I should wait and see if I get any incentives to take early retirement
- Maybe I should wait and see if the situation where I’m working improves.
I guarantee you this: If you don’t like where you are, it’s not going to get any better. Really. I promise you, if you’re unhappy, or you think you might be better off leaving where you are and starting a business, you will be sorry if you stay.
Where do you want to be 5 years from now?
Think of it this way: Imagine where you want to be and what you want to be doing 5 years from today. Picture it fully and completely in your mind. Capture all the details - sights, smells, sounds, everything. Then ask yourself this question: If I want to be there 5 years from now, how will staying where I am help me get there? If you can’t answer that question with at least one positive constructive idea, get out of where you are and get going on your new business.
Five years from now, you will be somewhere. If you start now to work on your goal, you have a better chance of getting to where you want to go than if you stay where you are.
